FLORENCE, S.C. — The military has honored a South Carolina soldier nearly six decades after he went missing in action in North Korea.

The military held a ceremony Friday for Pfc. James Charles Montgomery at Florence National Cemetery. The Lake City native was presumed dead Dec. 31, 1953.

He was listed as missing in action while fighting near the Hwachon Reservoir in North Korea on Oct. 14, 1952.

Montgomery’s aunt, Jessie Timmons of Lake City, thanked the honor guard that came from Fort Jackson. She said she’s waited for the service for 57 years.

His sister, Betty Randall, said the family finally has closure.
