LEWISTON, Maine — A Mechanic Falls native who was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading a bayonet charge against an enemy position during the Korean War has died.

Lewis Millett was 88. He died Saturday in Loma Linda, Calif.

Millett's younger sister, Alice Pepin, tells the Lewiston Sun Journal her brother felt strongly about defending his country.

Millett received the Medal of Honor in 1951 from President Harry Truman.

Millett joined the Army in 1940 and fought in World War II.

After the war he returned to Maine and attended Bates College before being sent to Korea. He later served in Vietnam.

He retired from the Army in 1973 as a colonel.
