PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — A Fort Drum soldier accused of fatally stabbing two fellow servicemen has been picked up in Ohio by deputies from New York, where he faces two counts of second-degree murder.
Joshua Hunter, 22, was arraigned Thursday on charges of being a fugitive from justice and waived his right to an extradition hearing in Portsmouth Municipal Court in southern Ohio.
He was arrested at a nearby hotel early Wednesday. He is accused in the deaths of 20-year-old Waide James and 23-year-old Diego Valbuena, both of Florida. Their bodies were found Tuesday in an apartment complex housing mostly military families near Fort Drum in New York.
David Hall, sheriff in Scioto County, Ohio, describes Hunter as “humble ... quiet and scared.” Deputies picked him up by cruiser after the court hearing.
