FORT JACKSON, S.C. — The Army’s Chaplain Center and School is dedicating its training wing in honor of a volunteer chaplain’s assistant who distinguished himself in battle during the Boxer Rebellion in China.

Army officials say Thursday’s ceremony at Fort Jackson will honor Cpl. Calvin Titus, who received the Medal of Honor for valor under heavy fire during a battle in China in 1900. Titus joined the Army in 1898 and saw duty in the Spanish-American War and during China’s Boxer Rebellion.

Titus volunteered to work with his regimental chaplain and accompanied him whenever the chaplain held services.

The Chaplain Corps was established in 1909 and chaplain assistants began to be formally trained after the Korean War.
