Guard, Reserve officers get chance at active duty

National Guard and Army Reserve officers have a shot at receiving a Regular Army appointment and serving on active duty through a program available this year.

The Call to Active Duty program is open to lieutenants of the Individual Ready Reserve, as well as basic-branch Guard and Reserve captains, majors and lieutenant colonels.

Those not eligible for CAD this year include lieutenants in a troop unit or an individual mobilization augmentee position, and all officers of the Army Medical Department, Judge Advocate General’s Corps and Chaplain Corps.

Officers who are selected for this program incur a three-year active-duty service obligation.

The program is one of several measures underway to meet the 22,000-soldier force expansion planned for the next two years, said Maj. Gen. Sean Byrne, commander of Human Resources Command.

While most of that growth will be met through enlistments, about 6,200 lieutenants will be commissioned via West Point, the Reserve Officer Training Corps and Officer Candidate School this year.

The CAD program augments the force expansion with trained, proven officers. Recently, the program has generated several appointments each year.

Criteria for this year’s CAD program require that company-grade applicants be graduates of an Army Competitive Category Basic Officer Leadership Course, either BOLC III of BOLC B. h

CAD requirements

• Majors must be graduates of a basic-branch Captains Career Course, and lieutenant colonels graduates of Command and Staff College or Intermediate Level Education.

• Credit for at least four years of active federal commissioned service.

• U.S. citizenship

• Baccalaureate degree or higher

• Secret security clearance or higher.

• Applicant must be able to reach 20 years of active service by age 62.

• Officers who have served as enlisted soldiers must be able to complete 10 years of active federal commissioned service before reaching 20 years of active service total.
