Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Frederick C. Weyand died late Wednesday at a retirement home in Hawaii.
Family members said Weyand, 93, passed away at 10:50 p.m. Stepdaughter Laurie Foster said Weyand died of natural causes.
Weyand oversaw the withdrawal of U.S. forces from South Vietnam from 1972-73, and he served as the 28th Army Chief of Staff from 1974-76, after the death of former chief of staff Gen. Creighton Abrams. He retired from active duty in 1976 after a 38-year military career.
Weyand held a number of commands, including the Germany-based 3rd Battle Group, 6th Infantry, from 1958-59; chief of staff for U.S. Army Europe in 1960; the 25th Infantry Division from 1964-67; II Field Force, Vietnam, in 1967. He also served as Army Vice Chief of Staff from 1973-74.
Weyand, a native of Arbuckle, Calif., was commissioned in 1938 through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at the University of California, Berkeley. He served in World War II in the China-Burma-India theater and commanded an infantry regiment in five battle campaigns during the Korean War.
Among his honors were the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.
Following retirement, Weyand became vice president and corporate secretary at First Hawaiian Bank. He retired from the bank in 1982, the year he was appointed a trustee of the now-dissolved Damon Estate, but continued to serve as a bank director until 2005.
During his retirement years, Weyand volunteered with numerous organizations, including the Honolulu Symphony, the Rotary Club of Honolulu, the Hawaii chapter of the American Red Cross and the Aloha United Way.
Survivors include Weyand's wife of 10 years, Mary, three children and four stepchildren.
A funeral service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Feb. 26 at Central Union Church. Burial will take place the following day at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
