Senator presents Vietnam vet with Bronze Star

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — A Stafford County man has received a belated Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.

Phillip O'Donnell was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service for his service as a pilot during Vietnam, but the 69-year-old never got it due to an administrative oversight.

O'Donnell spent 10 years in the Marines before joining the Army to attend helicopter school. He earned 11 air medals and a Purple Heart during his tours in Vietnam.

He had tired for years to get the medal but says he couldn't get to the right people.

Having been recently diagnosed with lung cancer, O'Donnell had one piece of unfinished business from that chapter in his life.

About a month ago, he called a staffer in Sen. Jim Webb's office. Webb awarded O'Donnell the medal in a ceremony late last week.
