Police charge man with scam on soldier

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A 45-year-old Anchorage man has been charged with scamming a Fort Richardson soldier just back from Afghanistan by renting out a home he did not own.

Michael Eugene Galioto is charged with felony theft.

Police say Galioto posted a house for rent on Craigslist and the soldier last month put down $1,800 in deposit and rent money.

According to police, when the soldier got ready to move in, Galioto told him the deal had fallen through and he could not refund the money.

Police arrested Galioto on Thursday. Police say Galioto had himself rented the home and the real owner lives in Soldotna.

Police recommend that prospective renters check the Anchorage municipal property appraisal Web site to confirm the identity of the owner.
