DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — A Douglasville soldier will spend 15 months in jail for selling more than $185,000 worth of stolen U.S. government computers.
Thirty-eight-year-old Earl Lamont Smith admitted pocketing the money from the sale of thousands of surplus government computers he claimed would be sent to soldiers stationed in Iraq.
Also sentenced to up to three months house arrest were 43-year-old Harold Grady of West Moreland, Tenn., and 48-year-old Gregory Murray, of Harrison, Tenn.
Authorities say all three men confessed to their part in the scam in December.
According to court records, the three soldiers were stationed at Army Reserve centers in Tennessee when they discovered that they could request surplus computers and other equipment through a federal program that makes such hardware available to other U.S. agencies in need.
