SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah National Guard is sending medical staff to Afghanistan for a yearlong deployment.
About 80 soldiers from the 144th Area Support Medical Company will leave Saturday for Fort Lewis, Wash., where they will stay for 30 days before flying to Afghanistan.
The soldiers hail from all corners of the state.
Once in Afghanistan, they’ll be responsible for treating patients in clinics and providing medical support in combat situations.
