3rd Quantico death in one week

Posted : Tuesday May 11, 2010 11:54:47 EDT

For the third time in a week, Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., has seen the death of a Marine on base.

The latest incident occurred early Sunday morning in base housing with the shooting death of Lance Cpl. Kevin P. Grant of Harvey, Ill., according to published reports.

Base spokesman Chuck Jenks said Grant, 20, was with friends when he was shot, but declined to say whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or the result of an action by another person.

“Circumstances indicate it appears to have been an accidental discharge of a firearm,” Jenks told The Washington Post.

Grant was taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, about 15 miles south of the Quantico base, and was pronounced dead.

Grant’s family was notified of the death, which is under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

The other two deaths took place on May 2.

The body of Staff Sgt. Nigel Castor, 32, was found in a home on base, though no cause or time of death has been reported.

And at 12:43 a.m., on the same day, the body of Lance Cpl. Lucas Gary Lowe, 20, was found near the Henderson Road railroad track crossing on base.

Police in Prince William County, which is conducting an investigation jointly with NCIS, were notified of Lowe’s death by the driver of a freight train that struck him, police said.
