3 Campbell soldiers die in Afghanistan blasts

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — Three soldiers from Fort Campbell died in separate attacks in Afghanistan, the military said Monday.
Sgt. 1st Class John H. Jarrell, 32, of Brunson, S.C., and Sgt. Leston M. Winters, 30, of Sour Lake, Texas, died July 15 in Kandahar province after their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive.
Jarrell and Winters were both assigned to 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
Jarrell joined the Army in June 1996 and came to Fort Campbell in February. He is survived by his wife, Wendi; a daughter, Emma, of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Brantley, of Alvin, Texas; and his parents, Bobby and Maude Duff of Estill, S.C.
Winters was a civil affairs medical sergeant who joined the Army in July 1998 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April.
Winters is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Remington; and a daughter Emma, all of Palmyra, Tenn.; a son, Jonathon of Germany; and his parents, Kenneth and Cheryl Spivey of Sour Lake, Texas.
Also on Monday, the military said Sgt. Matthew W. Weikert, 29, of Jacksonville, Ill., was killed July 17 in Paktika province when his unit was attacked with an IED.
Weikert was assigned to 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
Weikert joined the Army in September 2002 and arrived at Fort Campbell in October 2005. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Susan of Jacksonville, Ill.
