BUTLERVILLE, Ind. — National Guard and Army troops have gathered in southern Indiana to learn how better to respond to nuclear bomb blasts.

The exercise at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center involves more than 3,000 soldiers and emergency personnel. The center is staged to simulate Indianapolis after a nuclear attack, with actors portraying survivors in need of help.

Participants will undergo a series of exercises and be evaluated on their effectiveness.

Lt. Col. James Murphy of the Army’s 457th Chemical Battalion in Greenville, S.C., says the exercise hones soldiers’ skills so they are better able to support civil authorities.
