Ariz. Guardsmen headed to border by end of Aug.

PHOENIX — The first of 524 Arizona National Guard troops being allocated to that state’s border with Mexico are set to be deployed by the end of August.
Lt. Valentine Castillo, a spokesman for the Arizona National Guard, says training for the troops has been underway for weeks and that the first group will be on the border around Aug. 30.
More deployments will follow every Monday after that, until all are deployed by the end of September.
Meanwhile, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Wednesday that the first of 224 National Guard troops allocated for his state have finished their training and are expected to be deployed to California’s border Sept. 1.
The moves are part of President Obama’s proposal to deploy 1,200 National Guard personnel along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The deployment will last up to one year in support of counter-drug and border security operations.
