Police: Gunman killed in police shootout was GI

SALT LAKE CITY — Police said Saturday that the man killed in an exchange of gunshots that left a Salt Lake City police officer wounded was believed to be an Army veteran.

Police say Brandon S. Barrett was most recently stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Police say Barrett was spotted in camouflage clothing and toting a long gun near the Grand America Hotel about 3:40 p.m. Friday Police responded and gunshots were exchanged. Police Sgt. Robin Snyder says investigators are trying to determine who started the shooting.

Barrett was pronounced dead at the scene, and the officer was hospitalized with a leg wound.
