SALT LAKE CITY — A soldier who shot a Salt Lake City police officer in the leg and was killed when he returned fire was being sought as a deserter, the Army said.
Police returned fire Friday and killed Brandon S. Barrett, a soldier stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., who was in military fatigues and heavily armed on a busy downtown intersection.
The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash., reported Sunday that Barrett was a 28-year-old specialist who had returned from a deployment to Afghanistan in June.
Barrett was from Tucson, Ariz., according to base spokeswoman Jenny Willis. Barrett’s father, who still lives in Tucson, declined to comment.
Willis said Barrett joined the armed forces almost four years ago and disappeared July 20. He initially was classified as absent without leave. On Aug. 19, the Army obtained a federal warrant accusing Barrett of being a deserter.
