SALEM, Mass. — Gov. Deval Patrick signed a law Thursday designating the city of Salem as the birthplace of the oldest component of the U.S. armed forces.

Patrick signed the bill officially marking the birthplace of the National Guard at a Salem City Hall ceremony witnessed by Maj. Gen. Joseph C. Carter, adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard, soldiers and other officials.

The beginnings of the National Guard are traced back to the first muster of the East Militia on the Salem Green in April, 1636.

Four of the oldest units in the Army serve in the Massachusetts National Guard, including the 181st Infantry Regiment, the 182nd Cavalry Regiment, the 101st Field Artillery Regiment and the 101st Engineer Battalion.
