POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, Hawaii — The Army reported Friday that a Big Island wildfire that started late last month along Saddle Road near the Pohakuloa Training Area is 80 percent contained.
Officials at Army Garrison Hawaii said that mop-up operations of monitoring for hot spots and underground smoldering are expected to continue for several days.
Officials estimate the fire has burned nearly 1,400 acres since it began Aug 22 in the vicinity of the Mauna Kea State Recreation Area, east of the training area’s main gate. The Army said no training activity was taking place on the east side of Saddle Road at the time.
The military said the location is about 2.5 miles from the impact area where depleted uranium was found in 2006.
