MANHATTAN, Kan. — A 25-year-old man who died of carbon monoxide poisoning at a Manhattan duplex earlier this week has been identified as a soldier at Fort Riley. Another soldier survived the poisoning.

Authorities said Thursday that Spc. Jamie Elliott of Columbia, Md., died in his home Sunday along with 22-year-old Lashawn Michael Veal, who was not associated with the military.

A third person, 22-year-old Cpl. Maria Hightower of Chicago, was found alive but unresponsive. She remains at Stormont Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.

The Army says Elliott and Hightower were assigned to Company G, 299th Brigade Support and moved to Manhattan in September 2009 after year-long deployments in Iraq.

Authorities say the carbon monoxide came from a vehicle that was left running inside an attached garage.
