Army launches Stryker maintenance specialty

The Army has launched a multi-part campaign to fill the ranks of enlisted military occupational specialty 91S, Stryker systems maintainer.

The MOS, part of career management field 91, mechanical maintenance, will be added to the Army’s job classification system in fiscal 2011.

Soldiers who hold the specialty will serve as Stryker mechanics in Stryker brigade combat teams.

The specialty will be built through a combination of accessions through initial entry training, and the voluntary, and involuntary if needed, reclassification of soldiers in MOS 91B, wheeled vehicle mechanic, who have completed the Stryker operations and maintenance course and who hold additional skill identifier “R4.”

Under the accessions program, soldiers who enlist for MOS 91B and who successfully complete the ASI R4 course following advanced individual training, will be reclassified to MOS 91S.

The voluntary reclassification program is directed at 91B soldiers who have completed the R4 course and who are in the ranks of private through staff sergeant.

Soldiers who are interested in this voluntary reclassification program should contact their local career counselor.

A DA Form 4187, request for personnel action, must be signed by the soldier’s commander and endorsed by the first lieutenant colonel in the soldier’s chain of command.

Interested soldiers should apply before Oct. 1, according to an Aug. 25 directive from the Human Resources Command.

Personnel officials said the Army will implement a mandatory reclassification program Oct. 1 for selected 91B soldiers if not enough soldiers volunteer to move to 91S.

Soldiers who reclassify to 91S, either voluntarily or involuntarily, and who have received an enlistment or re-enlistment bonus, will not have any portion of that special pay recouped, according to the Army.
