EL PASO, Texas — Fort Bliss is considering selling about 1,800 acres of federal land to developers as part of an effort to get more housing for soldiers and other residents.
Maj. Gen. Dana Pittard, who commands the El Paso-area post and its 26,000 active-duty soldiers, says the property that could be offered would be for residential and mixed commercial use.
Pittard, during a forum Thursday, said in return, developers would agree to build at least 1,000 new military housing units. The proposal includes construction to begin by 2012, as the sprawling West Texas post anticipates having as many as 34,000 soldiers by 2015.
Any sale of government property would require Army approval.
