West Point cadets test cybersecurity program

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Cadets are taking on the role of “malicious insiders” in a study of front-line cyber threats.

U.S. Military Academy cadets are studying how vulnerable systems at forward operating bases can be from inside attacks. One group is using an information-protection program from Raytheon Co. as they simulate the environment of a forward operating base. Other cadets will test the system.

The Raytheon program, called SureView, is designed to protect systems against threats ranging from malicious codes to security leaks.

The cadets from West Point’s department of electrical engineering and computer science will make interim recommendations on how to detect and deter insider threats at a symposium this week in Nashville.

A final report is expected in July.
