Hood shooting victim again hospitalized

RENO, Nev. — Army Staff Sgt. Patrick Zeigler, who survived the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting and traveled to Reno this week to be recognized by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, was hospitalized Friday after falling in his Reno hotel room, a Texas television station reported.
Zeigler, who underwent six brain surgeries and grueling rehabilitation sessions after being shot in the head, shoulder, hip and forearm during the Nov. 5, 2009, attack, was presented with an elk hunting trip during foundation’s convention that opened Thursday in Reno.
Assisted by a cane, he walked onto the stage of the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino’s Tuscany Ballroom.
Later that evening, Zeigler fell in his hotel room and went to sleep, but woke up Friday morning with severe a headache, Waco television station KXXV-TV reported.
Zeigler underwent surgery, a large blood clot was removed and he was put on a ventilator, but his prognosis is good, the TV station reported, attributing the information to Fort Hood.
The Reno hospital where Zeigler, 29, is recovering was not specified. A message was left at Fort Hood on Friday night.
Zeigler first learned of the foundation’s plan to make his elk-hunting dream come true when it was announced during the 2010 convention in Reno.
Maj. Nidal Hasan, a 40-year-old Army psychiatrist, is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 31 counts of attempted premeditated murder in connection with the shooting.
