TDY help changes for reserve, recalled soldiers

Temporary-duty travel and transportation allowances will be authorized for reserve and retiree recall soldiers on voluntary duty for 180 days or fewer starting June 1.

Under policy guidance issued March 21, permanent change-of-station travel and transportation allowances will be paid to all reservists and retirees on voluntary duty at one location for more than 180 days.

The policy guidance applies to all reserve and retiree recall soldiers who volunteer to serve outside a combat zone or hazardous duty area in support of overseas contingency operations.

Soldiers no longer will be authorized the option of electing Contingency Operation Flat Rate Per Diem, or temporary change of station 55 percent tours, as a result of the policy change.

Soldiers serving on 55 percent tours, or full per diem orders, can continue in that status until the expiration date of their orders, or June 1, 2012, whichever is later.

Each new order for a voluntary tour over 180 days will be processed as a permanent change-of-station move, or “home of record” tour if the duty station is within commuting distance of the soldier’s home.

The 180-day restriction applies to initial orders for greater than 180 days, an extension of orders that cause an assignment to last longer than 180 days and multiple orders that result in greater than 180 days in any 12-month period.
