Guardsmen return tornado-damaged flag to park

BILLINGS, Mont. — Two Montana guardsmen and the Breakfast Exchange Club of Billings made it their mission to return a Montana state flag damaged in a June 2010 tornado to MetraPark, where it had flown.

Staff Sgt. Jacob Lindau tells The Billings Gazette they wanted to return the flag the way he and Sgt. Ed Cuny found it — dusty, dirty and tattered.

Lindau and Cuny helped to resupply an American Red Cross of Montana truck when they were surveying the tornado damage and spotted the frayed flag on Metra’s flagpole.

Lindau says it was unsuitable to fly, so they took it down. He says he thought it would be neat to get it framed and display it as a remembrance of what happened.

The Exchange Club had the frame built.
