SHREVEPORT, La. — A soldier and war veteran from Shreveport died over the weekend in a Texas car wreck, the Army says.
Spc. Joshua Winn, 21, died Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Florence, Texas. That’s just south of Fort Hood, Texas, where Winn was stationed.
He entered active-duty service the July after his graduation as a food service specialist. That, he told The Times in a 2009 graduation article, was something he wanted to do to get established in the food services business field.
According to published reports, Winn was a passenger in a 2008 Nissan in the single-vehicle accident on Farm-to-Market Road 970 at its intersection with Williamson County Road 252.
Three women in the vehicle, including the driver and a fellow Fort Hood soldier, suffered a range of injuries that were not life-threatening.
A Texas Department of Public Safety report said the Nissan was eastbound on FM 970 when the driver lost control and the car left the pavement and crashed into a tree. Winn was not wearing a seat belt, the report said.
The other occupants were restrained.
According to a military release, Winn was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, at Fort Hood since January 2010 and deployed to Iraq from August 2010 to August 2011.
Winn’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon and Army Service Ribbon, the Army said.
Funeral details were pending Tuesday.
