A man was charged in the shooting of a Fort Benning soldier who died on Saturday, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported.

The newspaper said Marcus Theodore Wiggins, 27, was charged with murder in the death of Spc. Donald Matthews.

The 26-year-old soldier died from multiple gunshot wounds early Saturday morning after getting into an altercation with Wiggins at a TGI Fridays in Columbus, Georgia, police said. 

Wiggins was arrested and taken to jail after a warrant was issued, the newspaper said.

Matthews, a human resources specialist, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning. He joined the Army in May 2012 and deployed to Afghanistan from June 2013 to March 2014, according to Army Human Resources Command.

His awards include the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
