"Thank You for Your Service," was one of New York Times book reviewer Michiko Kakutani's 10 favorites of 2013.

The movie retains the book's title, which Finkel said he chose because the words have "become such a ubiquitous phrase."

"People say it sincerely, but my sense is, from talking to soldiers, a lot of people say it without thinking much about it," he told Army Times in 2013. "If you read the book, in between the covers, these are some of the people you are saying 'thank you' to for their service. And this is some of what you are thanking them for."

Principal photography for the movie began this month, DreamWorks Pictures said in a news release. No release date has been announced.
