More than 100 soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division's combat aviation brigade will receive the Humanitarian Service Medal for their work during the 2013 Colorado floods.

The awards will be presented Friday during a ceremony at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Soldiers from the CAB were "pivotal contributors to the largest airlift evacuation in the Boulder floods since Hurricane Katrina," according to Fort Carson officials.

The soldiers also volunteered more than 560 hours outside of military operations to help in the recovery of communities affected by natural disasters in Colorado.

The Humanitarian Service Medal is awarded to any members of the U.S. military who distinguish themselves by meritorious participation in specified military acts or operations of a humanitarian nature.

Army Secretary John McHugh in June approved the awards for the CAB soldiers. They are being recognized for their actions Sept. 13-20, 2013.

Last year's floods killed at least eight people and damaged or destroyed as many as 2,000 homes across Colorado, according to USA Today.

The floods caused damage across nearly 2,000 square miles, and experts deemed it "was likely a 100-year flood," USA Today reported.
