NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. — The town of Northbridge is paying its final respects to a local soldier killed in Afghanistan.

A wake for Cpl. John Dawson is scheduled for Sunday at the Carr Funeral Home in the village of Whitinsville.

His funeral, with full military honors, is Monday at St. Gabriel's Church in Upton, followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery in Whitinsville.

The 22-year-old Dawson was killed April 8 in Jalalabad, Afghanistan when he was attacked by small arms fire while he was on an escort mission.

Dawson, who earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star, was a medic based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He was a 2010 graduate of Blackstone Valley Vocational Technical High School and attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Quinsigamond Community College before enlisting in the Army in 2012.
