A soldier from 2nd Infantry Division died Wednesday at Camp Hovey, South Korea, officials said.

Sgt. 1st Class Stephen Perry, 35, was assigned to 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

"We lost a member of our family Wednesday," said Col. Matthew Eichburg, commander of 1st Brigade, in a statement. "Stephen was a passionate soldier and a valued member of the Iron Team."

Army officials in Korea did not release any more information about Perry, who was from New Orleans, pending an investigation.

Perry reportedly was found unresponsive in his barracks at Camp Hovey and was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital, Stars and Stripes reported.

Officials from 8th Army would not confirm that information to Army Times, citing the ongoing investigation.

Perry, who has been in the Army since March 2000, was a signal support systems specialist, according to his Army records.

He had deployed twice to Iraq — first in 2003, then in 2005 — and had served at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Fort Polk, Louisiana and Fort Bliss, Texas. He arrived in South Korea in January for his assignment with 1st Brigade.

His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
