An Army-funded program that provides qualified enlisted soldiers with an opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing, and subsequently receive an appointment as a Nurse Corps second lieutenant is now open for applications.

The application deadline is July 1. Selections will be made by a Recruiting Command board that meets Aug. 26-28. School attendance will begin in fiscal 2016. Successful applicants who are stationed overseas will have their tour curtailed to meet training report dates.

To qualify for the fiscal 2016 Army Medical Department Enlisted Commissioning Program, soldiers of the Regular Army, National Guard and Army Reserve must:

• Have a general technical, or GT, score of 110 or higher on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery, and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher for all college-level courses previously attended.

• Have a minimum of 36 months, but no more than 144 months, of active federal military service as of the commissioning date. National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers will attend nursing school while in active component enlisted status.

Soldiers who participate in this program will incur a four-year active-duty service obligation.

After completing schoolUpon completion of schooling, and before commissioning, students must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for nursing. After commissioning, lieutenants will attend the AMEDD Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Army funding for this program is capped at $9,000 annually for tuition and fees at accredited nursing schools.
