Command opportunities are being sharply increased for health services officers under a professional development initiative prompted by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno.

Under the implementation plan approved by Army Surgeon General Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho in mid-November, Army Medical Department lieutenant colonel- and colonel-level commands will be commanded by officers designated for such duties by Centralized Selection List boards.

Under the previous system, medical commands have been staffed with a combination of CSL and non-CSL officers. The new alignment not only increases command opportunity across the Army Medical Command, but allows for more lieutenant colonel-level commands than colonel commands.

Changes to the AMEDD command pyramid are designed to hone the leadership skills and professional development of officers in the health services, which consists of the Medical Corps, Dental Corps, Nurse Corps, Medical Specialist Corps, Medical Service Corps and Veterinary Corps.

A summary of the ongoing changes follows.Command categories are designated by the position codes to be used in the CSL process.

Deployable medical support commands in the reserve components will remain general officer commands, while the commander of the Army Dental Command will continue to be selected by an advisory panel to the Army surgeon general.
