National Museum of the United States Army to begin construction at Fort Belvoir

Construction will begin on the National Museum of the United States Army on Fort Belvoir, Virginia according to Military.com.

The Army Historical Foundation made the announcement today. Retired Army Lt.Gen. Roger Schultz, the foundation's president, gave the greenlight for construction to proceed immediately.

"We've just reached another important milestone in our timeline for building the National Museum of the United States Army," Schultz said. "There is no other museum in the Army Museum Enterprise that tells the complete Army story and the Army's wide-ranging contributions to our nation's growth and development."

The museum, located on an 84-acre site adjacent to the Fairfax County Parkway, is projected to open in 2019.

"We look forward to the day when we open the Museum doors and share the Army's storied 241-year history with the American public and the Army family," Schultz added.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, the building will feature 185,000 square feet of museum space, a theater, state-of-the-art technology for dramatic historical exhibits and an interactive Experiential Learning Center designed to engage museum visitors.

Never before seen historical artifacts will be featured at the museum.

Outdoor space will include an amphitheater, a memorial garden, a parade ground and an Army trail.

The museum is estimated to host 700,000 visitors annually.
