Maj. Tera Carr, 38, U.S. Army soldier deployed to Afghanistan is competing for $1 million on the current season of "The Amazing Race."

Carr, who was a former military intelligence soldier and became and officer through the Army's Green to Gold program, gave credit to her military experience for helping her with the race.

"It's like going to basic training all over again," Carr told Stars and Stripes. "You don't know who your battle buddy is going to be, but you have no choice but to work with them."

Carr also told WUSA 9, "My military experience absolutely helped me adapt to working with a stranger. In the military you've got all walks of life.  I've been doing this for 20 years so I'm very comfortable around people with all different kinds of personalities.  I knew that no matter who my partner was that we were going to be there for the same reason which was to win and I kind of don't let things bother me.  Sometimes you just have to let things roll of your shoulder and move out and move on to the next thing.  So, if there was any kinds of points of contention we just refocused and moved on to the next thing and didn't hold any grudges."

The show airs Thursday evenings on CBS, but due to Carr's deployment, she wakes up every Friday morning (Thursday in the states) and watches the show over FaceTime with her husband.

Carr credits being a parent of four as her motivation for staying focused on the prize, said Stars and Stripes.

"Every step I took was for them."
