Afghanistan’s army showed off the sprawling air base, providing a rare first glimpse of what had been the epicenter of America’s war to unseat the Taliban and hunt down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks on America.
Germany and Italy declared their missions in Afghanistan over on Wednesday and Poland's last troops returned home, bringing their deployments to a low-key end.
The U.S., along with about 7,000 NATO forces, will leave Afghanistan by Sept. 11. CENTCOM said earlier this week it had completed about 25% of its withdrawal.
