A soldier from Fort Carson died this week in Germany, according to a news release from the Colorado-based post.

Sgt. Michael Martinez, assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was deployed to Grafenwoehr Training Area.

The 22-year-old was found unresponsive early Wednesday morning Germany time (around 10 p.m. Tuesday Colorado time) and was taken to a local German medical facility, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

Martinez, a fire support specialist who joined the Army in 2013, arrived in Germany on Jan. 21 for a nine-month deployment in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

“We are extremely saddened by the death of Sgt. Michael J. Martinez,” Col. Michael J. Simmering, commander of the 3rd ABCT, said in the release. “This is an unexpected tragedy and a personal loss to the Iron Brigade family, and my heartfelt condolences go out to Michael’s family at this time. All of our 3,500 deployed men and women are serving diligently to maintain the security and well-being of Europe, and Michael was a tremendous example of that dedication and selfless service to others.”

The cause of death is unknown and is under investigation, according to the release.

Another Fort Carson soldier died during a training accident in Colorado on Wednesday. 

Spc. Matthew Turcotte, 20, was assigned to 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He was shot during a combined arms live-fire exercise, according to the Army.
