The Army has identified the soldier who died Tuesday during medevac training at Fort Hood, Texas.

Staff Sgt. Sean Devoy with the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas, died after falling during hoist training near Robert Gray Army Airfield, according to an Army news release on Thursday.

Devoy, a medic with C Company, 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, was conducting training with an HH-60M Black Hawk medical evacuation helicopter. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on the Fort Hood range south of the airfield.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, led by a team from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center out of Fort Rucker, Alabama.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Staff Sgt. Sean Devoy’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said Lt. Col. Khirsten Schwenn, commander of the 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment. “The unexpected death of a family member is profoundly tragic. Staff Sgt. Devoy touched countless lives as a flight paramedic. We are deeply saddened by the loss of an extraordinary noncommissioned officer and teammate.”

Devoy, 28, joined the Army in 2010 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since December 2012. He was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant, the release said.

He deployed to Germany in 2010 and to Afghanistan in 2011, 2013 and 2016. His awards and decorations include the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Medical Badge and the Aviation Badge.
