A Fort Hood, Texas-based soldier died Monday after the pickup truck he was riding in crashed en route to a hospital, installation and local law enforcement officials said.

Spc. Jason Darryl Kane, 24, has been on a hog-hunting trip in Killeen with three other service members, local media reported. Kane and another hunter, identified by police as 22-year-old Joshua Moore, fell out of the back of the truck while it was "going at a pretty high speed," a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper told the Killeen Daily Herald.

The driver and another passenger circled back to pick up the injured men and sped toward Killeen's Metroplex Hospital, local media reported. They crashed en route; police responded to the wreck around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Kane was dead on arrival at the hospital, KCEN-TV reported. Moore was in critical condition; his current status was not immediately available.

Kane, of Surry, Maine, had served with 47th Ordnance Disposal Company, 79th Ordnance Battalion, since February 2012, according to a Fort Hood news release. He began his time in uniform in November 2010 and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from March to November 2014.

He had been was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal among other honors, the release stateds.

Kane was one the last of three Fort Hood-based soldiers to die in a three-day span, according to the installation: Warrant Officer Sean Michael Young, 35, died Sunday of an apparent gunshot wound at his off-base residence, and Capt. Lakito Tarraze Bynum, 36, died Saturday while serving with a civil affairs team in El Salvador.
