There will be 2,639 Regular Army promotions to the ranks of sergeant and staff sergeant on May 1, according to cutoff scores issued by the Army in late April.

May cutoff scores authorize 1,706 advancements to sergeant, and 933 to staff sergeant. The total is about 300 fewer than in April.

Staff sergeant promotions

The mid-ranks promotions will go to soldiers on the 8,504-name Army-wide E5 selection list, and promotable sergeants on the 8,004-name roster of soldiers who have been boarded for E6.

The monthly promotion plan for senior NCOs is pending release.

There would be more promotions to sergeant and staff sergeant for the Regular Army if additional soldiers in chronically short-handed specialties, called STAR MOS, were on selection lists.

As of late April there were 31 STAR MOS for sergeant, and 33 for staff sergeant. Soldiers in these shortage MOS will be speedily promoted if they are boarded and placed on the service-wide E5 and E6 recommended lists.

Career fields with the most STAR MOS for sergeants include Infantry, Engineer, Field Artillery, Air Defense, Cyber, Armor, Military Police, Military Intelligence, Medical and Mechanical Maintenance.

Career fields with shortage MOS for staff sergeants include Infantry, Engineer, Field Artillery, Air Defense, Aviation, Cyber, Communications, Military Intelligence, Acquisition and Contracting, Medical, Mechanical Maintenance and Electronic Maintenance.
