COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A 28-year-old man arrested in the death of his girlfriend's infant daughter in Fountain, Colorado, is a Fort Carson infantry scout who has deployed at least once to Afghanistan.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that Spc. Branden Keith Harms remains on active duty in the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in the death of a 4-month-old girl he was baby-sitting while the mother was away from her home on April 18.

When the mother returned, she immediately noticed her baby needed medical attention and took her to a nearby hospital. The baby was transferred to another hospital, where she died.

Harms' home is listed in Army documents as Deltona, Alabama. The public defender's office could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
