A soldier from the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade died Monday from an apparent gunshot wound on Fort Hood, Texas, officials said Wednesday.

Spc. Bernardino Guevara Jr., 21, died in a parking lot near the Sportsmen's Center on post. The Sportsmen's Center features a shooting range for skeet, trap or other target shooting. It also has a pro shop, playground, picnic areas, party rooms and equine boarding stable.

Guevara, who was from Roxbury, Massachusetts, entered active-duty service in September 2014 as a Patriot Launching Station Enhanced Operator. He had been assigned to 4th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade on Fort Hood since March.

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.

The circumstances surrounding Guevara's death are under investigation.
