The soldier who died Monday during a physical fitness training exercise at Fort Carson, Colorado, on Monday, July 25, has been identified as Spc. Matthew R. Hester.

Hester, 28, collapsed around 7:30 a.m. Monday after completing a run during in hisroutine training. Combat medics provided on-the-scene assistance before Hester was transported . Transported to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. Doctors , doctors pronounced Hester dead almost an hour later.

The Iinvestigation into the cause of Hester’s death is still underway.

Originally from Hollywood, Florida, Hester enlisted into the Army on March 17, 2015. A combat medic, Hester was assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Carson, in September 2015.

"By his very nature as a combat medic, Spc. Matthew Hester was a selfless soldier who always looked after the well-being of those around him," said Lt. Col. Jason M. Sabat, commander of 3rd Brigade's 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, ABCT, 4th Infantry Division, in a statement  Inf. Div. "Just as Matthew cared for others, we cared deeply about him. His loss greatly hurts us, and Matthew will be sorely missed within the Fighting Eagles Battalion and the Iron Brigade. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends at this time."
