Army Criminal Investigation Command is investigating the on-post death of one of its own at Fort Hood, Texas, according to a Tuesday release.

Staff Sgt. Steven Hines, a CID special agent, was found dead on Sunday night several dozen yards from the command's headquarters building, the release said.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our agents," said Maj. Gen. Mark Inch, the provost marshal general of the Army and commanding general of CID, in a statement. "The Criminal Investigation Command is a very small and close-knit organization.  Losing one of our own deeply affects us all."

Investigators do not suspect foul play but have not ruled it out, according to the release. Special agents from a different post have been called in to lead the investigation.

Hines enlisted in July 2007, and his awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, two Good Conduct Medals, two Iraq Campaign Medals and the Army Driver Badge.

Meghann Myers is the Pentagon bureau chief at Military Times. She covers operations, policy, personnel, leadership and other issues affecting service members.
