Maj. Gen. James Grazioplene is accused of assaulting a minor 30 years ago

He left active duty in 2005, but retired Maj. Gen. James Grazioplene is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Saturday, Aug. 26, facing six charges of child rape from incidents going back to the early 1980s.

Grazioplene is charged with rape of a minor between 1983 and 1989, according to a release on Monday from the Military District of Washington.

The civilian statute of limitations has run out on those incidents, but as a retiree, he is still subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The Army announced his charges in April. Following the Aug. 26 Article 32 hearing, similar to a civilian grand jury proceeding, a convening authority will decide whether to send the case to court-martial.

Grazioplene joined the Army in 1972 and served as an armor officer. The Gainesville, Virginia, native last served at the Pentagon as the director of force development in the Joint Warfighting Capabilities Assessment.

There are no plans to recall Grazioplene back to active duty for a trial, the release said.
