Army identifies Fort Hood soldier who died after swimming incident

A Fort Hood soldier died Oct. 16 after swimming with friends two days prior in Mansfield, Texas, according to a news release.

Sgt. Sameer Chalise, a 28-year-old unit supply specialist, was pronounced dead at the Methodist Mansfield Medical Center.

A detective with the Grand Prairie Police Department provided Army Times with a copy of the police report that listed Chalise’s cause of death as drowning.

On Oct. 14, a police officer was called to Loyd Park, near Joe Pool Lake. The officer spoke with a witness who said he heard people yelling for help about 15 feet from the shore, so the witness went over by boat to help but was unable to locate Chalise, the report said.

Fire rescue personnel then arrived and located Chalise, who was unresponsive. They performed CPR and transported him to the hospital, where he still had a pulse. Chalise died two days later.

Chalise entered active duty in January 2015 and was assigned to the Replacement Detachment, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hood, Texas, this month, according to the release.

The sergeant’s awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
