A Fort Hood soldier died on Tuesday after battling a terminal illness, according to Army officials.

Pfc. John Paul Funderburk Jr. died in Irving, Texas, which is his home of record.

The 24-year-old had been assigned to the Warrior Transition Brigade at Fort Hood’s Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center since November, according to the Army’s news release.

He joined the Army in January 2016 as a utilities equipment repairer.

His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
