The Army’s top general and top senior enlisted leader are both hitting the four-year mark in their jobs in 2019. That means the Army will be welcoming a new chief of staff and a new sergeant major of the Army.

Current Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley will be moving up to become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but there is no official word from Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey, who will have his fourth anniversary on the job in January.

President Donald Trump in December named Milley as his choice to succeed Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford as the nation’s top military officer. Dunford’s term is scheduled to end Sept. 30.

Milley was promoted to the Army chief of staff position from Army Forces Command, while Dailey had previously served as the command sergeant major of Training and Doctrine Command.

The Army only has a handful of four-star commands to choose from, but traditionally, top leadership have been picked from those positions.

Currently, the Army’s four-stars include Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville, TRADOC boss Gen. Stephen Townsend, Army Materiel Command’s Gen. Gustave Perna and Army Pacific Command’s Gen. Robert Brown, while others like U.S. Forces Korea’s Gen. Robert Abrams are serving in joint positions.

On the enlisted side, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Grinston is the current senior enlisted adviser at FORSCOM, while Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Guden is Townsend’s top enlisted leader, and Command Sgt. Maj. Benjamin Jones is at USARPAC. There is also Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Sellers, the current commandant of the Army Sergeants Major Academy.
