BROKEN BOW, Nebraska — A soldier with the Nebraska Army National Guard has died during routine fitness training in Broken Bow.

Staff Sgt. Trevor J. Kurtzhals, 29, died Saturday at a local hospital, The Lincoln Journal Star reports.

He had been at the Nebraska Army National Guard armory in Broken Bow as part of the Guard’s 1075th Transportation Company.

Kurtzhals, from Lexington, was an 11-year veteran of the Nebraska Army National Guard. His service included a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010.

He reportedly died of a medical problem, but the cause of death has not been released.

“Sergeant Trevor Kurtzhals’ devoted service to our state and country will never be forgotten,” Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and community as we grieve his sudden passing.”
