1862: In the Battle of Cross Keys, Maj. Gen. Richard S. Ewell's Division defeated Union forces under Maj. Gen. John C. Frémont, contributing to a triumphant conclusion of Maj. Gen. T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson's Valley Campaign.

1776: The Patriots under Brig. Gen. William Thompson were driven from their last foothold in Quebec after being defeated by Governor-General Guy Carleton in the Battle of Trois-Rivières. Thompson was among the 236 taken prisoner.

1861: Tennessee seceded from the Union.

1965: U.S. troops were authorized to conduct offensive operations against the Communists in Vietnam.
